Cleaning a rusted wok
A wok that gets rusty requires a different cleaning approach than how you would normally do the cleaning. In the usual cleaning method, it’s never advisable to use any metallic cleaning tools to damage the surface. It’s also not good to throw it into your dishwasher whether it’s rusted or still in good condition.
A rusty one requires thorough cleaning to get out the rust and restore the clean surface. Even quality woks do get rusted with time, depending on how well you get to clean it after using it. Here is how you can remove stubborn rusting from the cooking pot and make it looking brand new.
Using steel wool to remove rust
Use a good amount of steel wool depending on the size of the wok. Add soap to the steel wool, ensuring it lathers well with soap before starting the scrubbing method. Since steel wool is metallic, it’s best if you use it only on rusted woks. It’s not a guarantee that the rust will go away with a single scrubbing. You, therefore, need to do the scrubbing multiple times for effective results.
To make the rust come off quickly, ensure the steel wool is soapy at all times. It will take you less time cleaning the surface and make it sparkling clean. Fill your sink with some hot and soapy water to make the cleaning process ready. Scrub the affected areas with steel wool bit by bit. It requires patience to clean the entire surface that has rust. It could either be on the inside or the outside.
Rinse it after every scrub to confirm if the rust is coming out and to check places that require more scrubbing. Repeat this process multiple times for stubborn rust to get a smooth surface. Sometimes you require plenty of steel wool. When the entire surface is rust-free and left with a smooth surface, rinse the entire wok with running water.
Give it a final rinse with hot running water if you are satisfied with the results. Let it dry before seasoning it again. You can use some dry paper towels or some kitchen towels to pat it dry to remove any left water.
Running the wok on hot water will make it feel a little hot. Let it cool off before seasoning it again. There are two methods you can use to season a wok. Use what works best for your preference. The most common method is using cooking oil.
Using unsalted solid fat
When the wok is clean and dry enough, you can use a solid fat or margarine to re-season. Rub the fat all over the inner surface of the wok and then place it over the fire to heat. The heat should be low enough to melt the fat. Please turn off the heat when it feels hot without removing the wok from the fire. Let it cool before you can wipe off any excess fat left on its surface, and then store it appropriately.
Using salad oil
Pour a small amount of cooking oil, preferably a tablespoonful, onto the wok. Use a paper towel to spread the oil all over the surface. You should then add a small amount of oil for shallow frying. Place the wok over the fire and set it to moderate heat. The oil should be hot enough but shouldn’t be too hot to the point you see smoke coming out of the cooking pot.
Remove the wok from the fire only when the oil inside is hot and tilt it to the other surface. It should be able to spread to the entire surface of the wok.
Seasoning on the oven
With a little oil added to the already hot one, you can place it in a 250-450-degree oven for about an hour. Ensure you line it with aluminum foil and place it on the top rack and allow it to bake. Please turn off the oven and let the wok stay inside it overnight.
In the morning, remove it and use paper towels to wipe off the excess oil and make the wok as good as new.
You do not have to stick to only one type of seasoning. There are plenty of oils to choose from, including peanut oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, among others.

How to prevent future rusting
